About BCCI

The Bucharest Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIB) is a self-sufficient, non-governmental, non-political, non-profit, public-service organization without a patrimonial purpose, a legal person in its own right whose aim is to represent, defend and promote the interests of its members and the other economic actors of Bucharest, for the development of trade, industry, agriculture and services in line with the market economy requirements.

The Bucharest CCI members operate within six sections, i.e.: Services, Industry, Trade, Tourism, Research – Development -Innovation, and Collective Members

The Bucharest Chamber of Commerce and Industry is the rightful successor of the Bucharest Chamber of Commerce, never discontinued throughout its history, irrespective of its form of organization and operation or the name it has had since its set-up in 1868.

The Bucharest Chamber is working not only with and for your members, but also for the entire business community from Bucharest. According to its statute the BCCI members benefit from a wide range of facilities i.e. reduced fees, inclusively for renting exhibition space at ROMEXPO-organized fairs).

As an authorized representative of the Bucharest business community, BCCI is involved in ensuring a stable, coherent and transparent business environment, favorable to a stable development of the Bucharest economy, by promoting economic legislation favorable to the business community. Also BCCI supports local public administration in its goal to develop Bucharest on economic and social levels, inclusively through its involvement in several public – private partnerships. Thus BCCI is active in several committees and working groups in the Minister of Public Finances, the Prefecture of Bucharest, City Councils of Districts 2 and 3.

Promoting the Romanian offer abroad, especially outside EU both through traditional ways ( forums, economic missions, organized also through the support of the more than 90 cooperation agreements with similar institutions abroad) and through the opening of branches of BCCI abroad on target markets, doubled by permanent exhibitions with Romanian-made products, promoting key domains of the Romanian economy ( green energy, tourism, agriculture and food products) , bringing together the academic environment and economic environment, showcasing the business community the benefits of European funds are just some of the ways used by the BCCI to support the business community.

BCCI History

1859: traders work for the set up of a chamber system, with “independent activity and acknowledged authority in order to better uphold the vital interests of all the industrial branches” (C.A. Rosetti, senior of the traders in the Capital)

1860– Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza sends to the Legislation Assembly in Bucharest a law project regarding the organization of a chamber of commerce. Legislation is not pursued.

1864: the act on chambers of commerce is adopted.

  • January 1868: the first Chamber of Commerce, the Bucharest one, is set up on the then territory of Romania.
  • Trade Registry: on June 10, 1868, the “registration of commercial companies” is envisaged in Romania for the first time. The Bucharest CCI therefore plays a decisive role in the emergence of one of the major institutions of any market economy, i.e. the Trade Registry.

1870– BCCI is authorized to publish an average exchange rate of the main foreign currencies – thus recognizing the prestige and credibility of the Chamber

1875– The Bucharest Chamber is co-author of the first law regarding trademarks.
1884– At the Bucharest Chamber of Commerce initiative the law regarding the encouragement of the national industry is adopted.
1886: a new law on chambers of commerce is passed, taking these organisations from under the government’s umbrella. The Chamber is asked to support the organization of the first stock exchange

1895– The Bucharest Chamber opens the first office for commercial information, which swiftly gains the trust and appreciation of foreign companies established then in Romania.
1899– The Chamber publishes his positions regarding cartels.
23 mai 1911– The Palace of the Bucharest Chamber of Commerce and Industry is opened in the presence of H.M. King Carol I, members of the Romanian Royal Family, high government officials, members of the Chambers of Commerce.
1926– At the Bucharest Chamber’s initiative the cheque is entered as an accepted payment method.

  • The Bucharest CCI organizes the Cattle Market of the Capital, the first fair of nationwide interest, followed by other merchandise fairs in the Bucharest markets.
  • Until mid 20th century, the Bucharest CCI supports and finances commercial and occupational training.

1949– Through Decree 74/25.02.1949, all Chambers of Commerce are dissolved with the exception of the Bucharest Chamber of Commerce. With a amputated domain of activity, restricting only to the support of the foreign trade, deposed by all its properties, the Bucharest Chamber keeps alive the spirit of the Chamberal system.
1949-1990– The Chamber of Commerce is active, under different denominations, inside the Ministry of Commerce.
1990-2005– BCCI is active as a department inside the Romanian Chamber of Commerce.
2008– BCCI reorganizes itself, according to the Law 335/2007.
