Tohru Honda

Tohru is a sixteen year old girl that becomes orphaned after her mother's death. She goes to live with her grandfather, but has to move out when he begins remodeling his house for his daughter and her children. He asks Tohru to possibly move in with some friends for awhile.

Tohru doesn't want to be an imposition to her friends and decides that she will live in a tent instead. It isn't long until she is found out. She is offered a place to stay by the Sohma family (more specifically Yuki and Shigure Sohma), whose property she was 'camped out' on. She graciously accepts but only if she can cook and clean for her room and board.

Tohru eventually discover the 'Sohma Curse', and is quite surprised by the fact that the members of this family turn into the Chinese Zodiac animals when hugged by a member of the opposite sex. She swears to the Sohma's that she will not tell anyone about their curse.

Tohru is extremely polite, kind, and selfless. She tries hard to please others, and sincerely wants to get to know everyone. In fact the others are always telling that she needs to think about herself more, instead of others. Tohru has always felt like an outsider, but in a household full of outsiders, she feels like she's home. Tohru might be the thing the Sohma family needs to cure their troubled hearts.

Yuki Sohma

Yuki is the rat Zodiac symbol. He left the main Sohma house so he could attend the co-ed high school. He is also known as the 'Prince' at school, where he is extremely popular. He is so popular amongst the females of his school that they have a 'Prince Yuki Fan Club.' These 'fangirls' resent the fact that Yuki seems to be getting closer to Tohru, and try to drive her away.

It is hard on him being so popular, but being unable to really get close to anyone because of his curse. If a girl were to hug him, his curse would be revealed. Yuki has a hard time being sociable, but Tohru is slowly getting him to open up more. He is smart and witty, as well as a excellent martial artist and gardener. There has been no mention of Yuki's parents, but he does have a brother Ayame. His biggest rival is Kyo (the cat). They are usually fighting over something.

 
Kyo Sohma

Kyo is the cat. The cat is not from the Zodiac, but according to the ancient legend this is because the rat tricked the cat and took it's place at the banquet to induct the animals into the Zodiac. Since Kyo is not an official Zodiac animal he is shunned by the majority of the Sohma family. Kyo detests Yuki and has dedicated his life to beating him. If he beats Yuki, he will be accepted by the rest of the family. Kyo has spent most of his time studying and training in martial arts with his mentor and father figure Kazuma Sohma. Even doing this, he has yet to beat Yuki in a fight.

Kyo is a bit lazy, but easily gets aggravated, especially in rainy weather. He likes to yell, even if he doesn't really mean any harm by it. He is also a good cook and makes good grades in school. He has a hard time dealing with other people, but Tohru is helping open up more. Ultimately, Kyo isn't as bad deep down as he wants everyone to think he is.

Shigure Sohma

Shigure is the dog of the Zodiac. He owns the house where he, Yuki, Kyo, and Tohru live. Shigure is a novelist, and writes serious books, but he also moonlights as a romance author under a pen name. He enjoys drinking tea and eating takoyaki, smoking cigarettes, and sleeping late. Oh, and he loves driving his publisher insane.

He spends most of his time at home wearing his kimono. He has a good sense of humor, and as one of the senior Sohma's looks after Yuki and Kyo. He is best friends with Hatori and Ayame (Yuki's brother). He is also a bit of a pervert.

It seems as Shigure is planning something, regarding Tohru. He also visits Akito more regularly than the other family members, without seeming afraid of him. What could he be planning with Tohru, Kyo, and Yuki?

Kyoko Honda

Kyoko Honda is Tohru's mother. She died one day in a traffic accident. Tohru still hasn't forgiven herself for that day because she didn't tell her mom goodbye that day before she left.

Kyoko loved her daughter very much, and raised her alone after the death of Tohru's father. Kyoko was once a famous 'Yankee', or gang member, known as the 'Red Butterfly'. The Red Butterfly was known as being the toughest gang member. She always regretted not finishing high school, and that why Tohru is determined to finish high school, for her mom. Tohru is still having a hard time dealing with the fact that her mother is gone, and carries her picture everywhere, and talks to her as if she's there.

Saki Hanajima "Hana-chan"

Hana can sense electrical waves, and as a results can read peoples auras, and sense how people are feeling or thinking. She also is very goth, wearingh black most of the time. The combination of these things scares most of her classmates. Hana is a very good friend to Tohru, in fact she, Uo-chan, and Tohru are best friends. In fact she is very protective of Tohru, and uses her electric waves to scare away the 'Yuki Fan Girls'.

Hana lives at home with both her parents, in a normal looking house, which is a surprise to the 'fangirls', they figured she lived in a scary castle or something. She also has a brother Megumi, who also has the ability to sense waves.

Arisa Uotani "Uo-chan"

Uo-chan was once a 'Yankee', or in a gang. That is until Tohru and her mother, Uo-chan's hero, helped her break free from her gang. Even though she is no longer in a gang, she still talks tough, and is very intimidating. Those that are close to her know that she really has a kind heart. She is best friends with Tohru and Hana. She is also very protective of Tohru.

Uo-chan's mother left her and her father when she was younger, and now she lives with her father in a small apartment.

Momiji Sohma

Momiji is the rabbit Zodiac symbol. He is half Japanese and half German. He also acts a lot younger than he is, he's playful and full of energy, but he is also very wise, and always has a kind word to offer. Momiji first meets Tohru when she is cleaning his father's office building. He likes Tohru from the start, and is happy to know that she knows the family 'secret'.

Momiji has a sad event that happened in his past concerning his mother. Even with this, he is still believes that there is no memory that should be forgotten. He wants to remember everything, even the painful memories.

Hatsuharu Sohma "Haru"

Hatsuharu's zodiac animal is the cow. Hatsuharu has a split personality. One side is rather stone-faced and melow, while the other known as 'Black Haru', is a loud, rude, and violent. He is 'white' Haru most of the time, but when he turns 'black' watch out. He has a rivalry of sorts with Kyo.

He dresses in leather, and clothes that remind you of the J-rock styles. He lives at the main Sohma house, and has a 'crush' on Yuki. It's more of a deep caring then anything 'physical'. In the manga, Hatsuharu was in a relationship with Rin (Isuzu) Sohma (Horse) until she called their relationship off. It is believed to be because Akito made her. Sort of the same situation as Kisa and Hiro (see below). He has decided to not give up on her.

Ayame Sohma

Ayame's zodiac animal is the snake. He is also Yuki's older brother, a fact that Yuki sometimes would like to forget. Their brotherly relationship is strained to say the least. There is a 10 year age difference between the two, and because of this Yuki rarely saw Ayame when he was younger and felt as if he didn't have a brother. Now, Ayame regrets not being there for his brother, and is trying to get closer with Yuki.

Ayame is very feminine looking, and he also owns his own shop. He is a 'fashion' designer. Well, he designs 'cosplay' looking outfits (maid outfits, sailor fukus, and etc.)  for his customers, with his assistant, Mine. He is loud, over-dramatic, and quite egotistical. He, Shigure, and Hatori are the best of friends, and have been since the were younger.

Hatori Sohma
Age: 27

Hatori's zodiac animal is the dragon, or in his case, a seahorse. He is the Sohma family's doctor, and spends his time at the main Sohma house attending Akito.  He also has the ability to erase people's memories, and has done so in the past when Akito has ordered it.

The curse has caused Hatori much anguish. He fell in love with a woman and wanted to marry her, but Akito wouldn't allow it. Akito got upset and attacked hatori, resulting in Hatori being blinded in his right eye. He ended up having to erase the woman he loved memories. He has since had to endure the pain alone, though being around the other Sohma members and Tohru has eased his hurt a bit. He is beginning to mend his heart.

Kisa Sohma
Age: 12-13

Kisa's zodiac animal is the tiger. Kisa is very shy and self-conscious. She was picked on by her classmates, which caused her to not speak for awhile. That is until Tohru got her to open up. Tohru understood her situation, because she was in a similar situation herself as a child, being picked on. Kisa can be seen tagging behind Tohru, whom she adores. She lives with her mother, who adores her, and worries about her.

Kisa has endured her fair share of pain in the past as well. She and Hiro often played together as children. Hiro developed feelings for Kisa and told Akito that he loved her. Akito's answer, he beat Kisa up. Kisa never knew why this happened, or about Hiro's feelings for her.

Hiro Sohma

Hiro's zodiac animal is the sheep. He is  pessimistic and very obnoxious to everyone, with the exception of Kisa, who he has a deep admiration for. He keeps his feelings for Kisa to himself, especially after the incident with Akito (see Kisa). He feels responsible for her getting hurt, so to protect her he stayed away from her.

He doesn't hate nor like Tohru, instead he views Tohru as a sort of rival for Kisa's attention, so he picks and insults Tohru often. He is jealous that Kisa spends so much time with Tohru. After Tohru told him that he was Kisa's 'prince' and he can protect Kisa, he is a bit more nice to her.

Kagura Sohma

Kagura is the boar zodiac animal. She has adamantly declared her love for Kyo, and she fully intends to marry Kyo one day, a fact that Kyo doesn't sound to interested in. As one of the female zodiac members, she can hug the male members without them turning into their respective animals.

She is usually sweet and caring, but can be quick to turn angry and violent, usually towards Kyo. Her relationship with Tohru is pretty good, considering Tohru is her rival in regards to Kyo.

Ritsu Sohma

Ritsu is the monkey. He looks to be a female at first glance because of his feminine looks. It doesn't help matters that he dresses like a girl . He does this to cover up his feelings of inadequacy. He is very shy, nervous, and suffers from panic attacks. Ritsu is very apologetic, apologizing for *everything*.  He also feels as if he is a disappointment to his family. His mother works at the family Onsen (Hot Springs), and his hero is Ayame.

Akito Sohma

Akito is the head of the Sohma family. He *ahem* allows Tohru to stay at Shigure's as long as she promises to never reveal their family secret, because if she does 'he' will have Hatori erase her memory. 'He' is very frail, and most of the time stays at the Sohma main house, where Hatori is nearby to treat his illnesses. Akito is a tyrant, and has vicious streak, harming some family members and causing mental anguish for others. Most of the family do whatever Akito bids, regardless of their own personal feelings. 'He' likes to remind Yuki of the time 'he' locked him away, alone from everyone else, because 'he' knows this has scarred Yuki. 'He' also despises Tohru.

Kureno Sohma

Kureno is the rooster of the Chinese zodiac.. Not much is known about Kureno, his family, or his past, other than Akito likes to keep him hid away from the other juunishi . The other members of the family only get to see him on New Year's, and even then he is not allowed to interact with the other members much. He is also always at Akito's beck and call. Out of all the members of the family, Kureno is the one that must tend to Akito's needs 24 hours a day. In fact, he is rarely allowed outside of the main house. On one of the occasions when Akito did let him leave, he met Uo at the convenience store where she works! Kureno is the very last juunishi to be revealed in the manga. He is a 'special' member of the family because he has a secret about his curse.

Isuzu "Rin" Sohma

Rin is the horse of the zodiac. She's mysterious and, not much is known about her or her past. She tends to be rebellious and angsty. She is desperately trying to find a way to break the curse, so she can be with the person she loves the most. Rin and Haru were once an item, but Rin ended up breaking up with him for an "unknown" reason. Rin was hospitalized for a while, but she is now living with Kagura and her mom.
